Five San Diego spots worth the drive
Where to take an exotic in San Diego when you want the road, the backdrop, or both.
A supercar in stop-start traffic is a waste of a rental. Every car named below is on our San Diego fleet. These are the places in and around San Diego that actually reward having one.
Torrey Pines and the La Jolla coast
The obvious one, and still the best. Cliffs, ocean, and a road that flows. Go early.
Mount Palomar
South Grade Road up to Palomar is the proper driving road in the county — tight, technical and largely empty midweek. Not the drive for a Cullinan; ideal for a Lamborghini Huracán or a Porsche 911.
Coronado
The bridge across and the run down Silver Strand is flat, open and photogenic, with the Hotel del Coronado at the end of it. This is the one for a convertible.
Del Mar and the racetrack
During the season, Del Mar is where the cars come out. Worth timing a rental around if you want the car to be part of the day rather than the transport to it.
Sunset Cliffs
Short, slow, and entirely about the backdrop. If the rental is for photography, this is where to end the day.
